1962 Books
These are the most recent Trad versions of the Little Office. They are the shortest, though the differences aren’t very big. Oddly enough in both these editions the Latin text is on the Right. When typing up booklets I was given to understand the the Latin should go first and therefore should be on the Left.
Baronius Press
A handsome leatherette bound edition with gilt edges and two ribbons. This edition stands out as being the first to include chant notation. Strangely enough they do not include accent marks or asterisks in the main text, making it quite difficult to sing from. The Latin and English are in columns. To accommodate the lack of space, hymns are typeset in a smaller font.
Angelus Press
A handy softcover edition. This also includes the Office of the Dead, a very old office including only Matins, Lauds and Vespers. This does include accent marks and asterisks, making it easier to sing from, although not having any chant notation is a drawback. The Latin and English are on facing pages, giving plenty of room for long lines.
1915 Books
These have commemorations of All Saints after Lauds and Vespers.
Benziger Press Reprints
This book was the basis for the Angelus Press version above. I have made four variations from the same scan:
And here are the photos:
These books include accent marks and asterisks, making the singing easier, although no chant notation is included. The Latin and English are on facing pages and the Latin is on the Left.
Karl Keller’s Editions
This is the bulkiest book as it aims to eliminate flipping back and forth. It has no contents page, but page headings help you to navigate the three sections: Before Advent, Advent and After Advent. The English and Latin are on facing pages with Latin on the Right. The typesetting is a little erratic with some Latin parts accented and some unaccented.
Maybe a minor point, but the paperback has the oddity of beginning the page numbers on a left hand page, so all odd numbers are on the left. The book is 6x9 inches with 310 pages.
As well as the commemoration of Saints, Keller also includes optional commemorations of St Joseph and St Francis of Assisi.
Pre 1915 Books
As well as including the Commemoration of Saints, these also include three more short Psalms in Lauds.
St Bonaventure Publications
This is a reprint from a larger book from 1904 edited by Fr Lasance. The margins seem a bit big and the font a bit tiny. There are no accent marks. The Latin and English are in two columns with the Latin on the Left.
Richard Grace Reprint
This is photographic reproduction of an Irish book from 1832. The scans aren’t great and the original typesetting was very uneven with many typos, but it’s a handy little book. It also includes table prayers in Latin and English. The Latin and English are in two columns with the Latin on the Left.
Christopher Kent’s Edition
Retypeset from an 1850 book called the Golden Manual, this is an impressive undertaking. Being retyped, the text is clear. The Latin is rendered without accent marks or asterisks. The English translation of each psalm has numbered verses, making it easier to pinpoint where you are up to. The Latin is on the Left.
A new edition in latin/portuguese:
https://www.loja.obrascatolicas.com/oficio-parvo-de-nossa-senhora
This version covers both the rubrics of Saint Pius X and those of Trent and has gregorian notation. Furthermore, following the portuguese-brazilian tradition, it offers the option of various commemorations.
